SECULAR ONTARIO

is a non-profit corporation formed in 2006 to promote and defend the secular and civil nature of Ontario society.

OUR PURPOSES

• To promote and encourage harmony among the province's diverse communities of ideologies, and cultures
• To promote a communal etiquete for conducting municipal and provincial affairs so that no individual or group suffer discrimination
• To insure that no individual or group suffer discrimination because of their religion or non-religion when applying for or conducting activities sanctioned by or funded by the province
• To insure that dissemination of scientific knowledge is not thwarted by its contradiction with faith-based beliefs
• To insure that no favour or concession is granted to any particular religiously based belief or ideology.

CURRENT PROJECT

Secular Ontario's first initiative is to request that municipalities in Ontario refrain from reciting the "Lord's Prayer" at council meetings. The population of Ontario embraces a variety of religious sects and some do not acknowledge any deity. Municipalities serve all residents and cannot be seen as favouring one particular religion. Therefore, municipalities have to remain secular so that all of its citizens can feel included.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership to SO is open to anyone who shares the aims of SO and wants to help us continue our current project or any other future issues. SO welcomes individuals who endorse the view that in a democracy, it is essential that that Religion and State be separate and that public life be kept free of religious rituals and practices that divide people from each other.
